One of the most common questions I get from expecting parents is: “When should we book our newborn photography session?”
The short answer? There is a sweet spot—but there’s also a lot of flexibility, because every baby (and every parenting journey) is beautifully different.
The “Ideal” Window for Newborn Photos
Traditionally, newborn photography sessions are best scheduled when babies are between 5 and 14 days old. During this time, newborns tend to be:
- Extra sleepy
- More relaxed
- Easier to gently pose
- Still naturally curled up from their time in the womb
That combination makes it easier to capture those classic, cozy newborn images—tiny fingers, sleepy smiles, and all those sweet details that change so quickly. There is also a higher chance your partner will be home from work to attend the session.
Because this window is so popular, many photographers (myself included) recommend booking your newborn session during your second or early third trimester. This ensures availability around your due date, especially during busy seasons here in Edmonton.
But Here’s the Important Part…

If your baby is a little older—whether that’s 3 weeks, 6 weeks, or even a few months—we can still create meaningful, beautiful images. Older newborns may be more alert, stretch out more, and interact differently with their surroundings. These sessions often feel a bit more lifestyle-focused, capturing eye contact, expressions, and connection.
There is no “missed opportunity”—just a different story being told.
While that early newborn stage is often ideal from a technical standpoint, it’s not the only right choice.
Every family’s experience is different. Some parents have longer recoveries, some babies arrive early or late, and some families simply need more time to settle in. That’s completely okay.
Choosing a Timeline That Feels Right for You
When deciding when to book your newborn photography session, I always encourage parents to ask themselves:
- How am I feeling about postpartum recovery?
- What kind of experience do I want—posed and sleepy, or more natural and interactive?
- Do I want to photograph those first quiet days, or wait until things feel a bit more settled?
You should book on a timeline that you feel comfortable with, not one that adds pressure during an already emotional and transformative time.
